Finding the Right Sheen for Venetian Plaster

Sheen is the decision clients underestimate most. The colour is chosen in an afternoon; the sheen determines how the wall behaves for the next twenty years.

A high polish is the traditional Venetian look — deep, reflective, almost stone-like. It flatters tall rooms with controlled light and reads as luxury immediately. It also shows every imperfection in the substrate behind it and every fingerprint on it.

Satin sits in the middle and is where most residential projects land. It carries depth and movement without the mirror effect, and it is far more forgiving in rooms with raking side light from a single window.

Matte reads as the most contemporary and the most tactile. Movement in the plaster is visible as texture rather than reflection, which suits large open volumes and rooms where the wall should recede behind furniture and art.

Our rule of thumb: the more directional the light and the busier the room, the lower the sheen. Save high polish for dining rooms, entries and powder rooms where the wall is meant to perform.
